The 2016-W Gold Mercury Dime was struck to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Mercury Dimes, first struck in 1916. The obverse and reverse of the 2016-W Gold Mercury Dime have the same depiction as the 1916 Mercury Dime. However, the 2016 Gold Mercury Dime is composed of 24 karat gold and weighs one-tenth troy ounce. The Mercury Dimes were composed of mostly silver content and were made for circulation. While the 2016 Gold Mercury Dimes were only sold to collectors.
- The 2016-W Gold Mercury Dimes were officially released by the U.S. Mint on Wednesday, June 17, 2016. Each dime had an issue price of $205. directly from the U.S. Mint. The U.S. Mint imposed a 10 coin limit per household. The dimes sold out within less than an hour on the first day of sales. The maximum authorized mintage was set at 125,000.
